Why -1/12 is a gold nugget

Komentarze: Why -1/12 is a gold nugget "a kind of mathematical gangster" - od theunstopablebullet
There is no proof of string theory, and this assignment suggests that string theory is a religion, not a science. - od Theodore Seeber
the Jaime Lannister of mathematics ! - od SUPERJACK7777777
mind = blown - od Shams Shaikh
It seems like there are some parts you cut out (it jumps regularly). Is there a full version of this interview? - od Aeroscience
handsome teacher ain't he? - od Pinkie Pie
You look like a mixture between Thom Yorke and Jaime Lannister - od JPetrie
What a beautiful offering. Thank you.
 - od marvin chester
At the end he just doesn't explain anything, - od tomaspianist
If just that idiot student would stop asking question and let the professor explain something, it would be so great!!! - od tomaspianist
That voice is awesome. - od Hidan2125
This is one of the strangest things about mathematics.   There are things to be "discovered", when it's really just ideas invented in peoples minds, with no physical reality. - od codediporpal
The best explanation of this -1/12 business I've ever seen. There IS a lot more going on here than some of the other professors did a poor job of articulating. - od opmike343
What's the point of saying that such a sum equals -1/12 without actually explaining the assumptions and rules of the theory used to get that result? That's like saying to your friend: "Oh there is this very good movie, exceptional, astonishing, a masterpiece: you should definitely watch it!" and then not even mentioning the movie's title, or which actors it stars.

Typical of mathematicians... Here, such a result exists, I have the proof! How to find it? Well it exists, that was all the fun eh. - od LordYalet
Setting the particulars of ratio of 1/12 aside, the main question would be exactly how does a positive sum become negative? - od afemai
- od Gary Gallagher
It is fun how it is called imaginary as a mockery of the number (-1)^1/2, when all of math is imaginary.
The irony ^o^! - od Electro-Cute
Thanks. The analogy drawn between the square root of a negative number and renormalization of the naively infinite sums by the construction of a more inclusive mathematical setting was just beautiful in its phrasing. Bravo! I'm nostalgic for my course of complex analysis many decades ago. Talk about a nugget of gold in the infinite dirt of the internet.  - od Bruce Reinhold
I hereby declare 1/0 to equal Z. Z may or may not equal infinity.
2/0 will also equal to Z. Z multiplied by any nonzero number is equal to Z. Z multiplied by zero would be 0/0. 0 * x = 0 (where x is any number that isn't Z). therefore x = 0/0. and since Z = 1/0 then Z/Z = x. x is still any number. 0Z is equal to x. - od OmegaA1000
I think this is my favorite numberphile video because it explains so well the process of mathematical development and gives a glimpse into mathematical thought processes that most people do not see. - od MuffinsAPlenty
