Dumb questions....What's the difference between gold plated and gold filled? Where are you selling this stuff? also- are you having to extract the gold from the scrap before selling? Thanks - od thowell33
The reason it says 1/20 is: it HAS to contain at least 1/20 of the pieces wt in gold, to be gold fill. usually over brass which is also scrap able. gold plate is usually over a cheap metal like nickel or a white(mixed) metal. best to reverse electroplate either. the amounts types of metals will destroy aqua regia. - od dadrules714
Some might consider scrap gold as unwanted gold but still it has so much value because scrap gold is still being measure its value, it assessed the purity of it and the karat is being determined as well. - od Profit With Gold

I'm pretty sure with gold filled, the gold is mixed in the metal so when it wears, it still looks gold. Gold overlaid is gold on top. - od 2ndhanddaisy
I deal direct with the refinery's here in LA and i can give you the top price for your gold filled if you are looking to sell it. Paying $0.50-0.80/gram The markings typical of gold filled items are "14k gf" or "1/20 14k" "1/10 gf" ect. You will find many items are gold filled such as old watch cases, necklaces, rings, chains, ect. - od Sun Bo

here is some info on that 1/20 = 0.05 (or 5%)1/20 12K Gold filled 100g x 0.05 = 5g 12K = 12/24 = 0.5 (or 50%) 5g x 0.5 = 2.5g you need to weigh your stuff using troy ounce not avoirdupois ounce - od MRlol stupidworld

It's funny because we were trying to sell the Gold Filled pins and other jewelry that we had and nobody would buy them. Then we meet a buyer who said he wanted to scrap them and he wound up paying us a little more than we were even asking. We don't scrap everything though. Just the junk, broken or unsellable stuff. - od 2ndhanddaisy
Great video and some good comments. It seems to me like the people who buy GF for scrap are kind of picky and want it completely clean. If you put in the extra work of stripping down watch bands and cases and making sure only actual gold filled parts are in the lot you will see a better price. Lots of gold filled sells good as jewelry too, especially GF victorian pieces. I don't see much of it at sales, would love to buy a ton of it off someone who thought it was junk. Good luck and TFS - od Thrift Hunter
Nothing plated. Gold Filled. The trick is finding someone who will scrap it or you can put it on Ebay with a title like " Gold Filled Jewelry for Scrap ". Do a completed Ebay search with Gold Filled Scrap and you'll see what I'm talking about. :-) - od 2ndhanddaisy
I've got tons of this stuff, no way ! Is it just gold filled? What about plated or rolled gold.? EP - od Tom The English Picker
