I recommend you use borax glass. It has much less moisture and is easier to work with. P.S. I'm an assayer. - od David Howard

The borax makes a black glassy material that can be seen stuck to the inside of the crucible around 3:39 when I break it to get the gold button out. - od mbmmllc
where does the borax go? - od leonphelps123
I have never done any smelting with a high concentration of black sand. I have about 300 lbs of black sand in buckets I have removed all the free gold from and it still assays about 5 oz/ton (about 3/4 of an ounce sitting there). Let me know how your project works and I might try it myself if I get some time. Thanks for posting. - od mbmmllc
thanks! Ill post a vid when Im done, I am wondering have you ever tried kilning off large amounts of blacksands at a time? Or do you think it would be better to cyanide leach it? - od Joshua Saksa
This kid made a great vid on how to build your own backyard kiln for less than $100: ***I tried to post the link in the comment, but it wouldn't let me so I put it in my video description for anyone who is interested.*** He said it will melt copper, which has a melting point very near gold. Good luck. - od mbmmllc
Any tips for making my own backyard kiln? Can i melt gold with charcoal and a billow? - od Joshua Saksa
If you wanted to get rid of some of the base metals(not all) you could use some sodium carbonate with your borax. Nice to see a person that knows you only need borax and not a "flux" to melt gold. Nice vid. - od metalicmario
I dump around a teaspoon or two per ounce of gold. The borax doesn't remove metals such as silver, and copper. It works great for removing the black sand, which combines with the borax to form a black glass type of material. The purity of our gold is around .950 fine. Thanks for watching and posting. - od mbmmllc
what is the ratio of borax and what is the purity of the button? - od Calgold49
