I am from a goldsmith family, though I do not practice it. Typically gold smithy is learnt as an apprentice from childhood (5+) to late teens. Then the individual goes on his own based on his specialization or continues to work for some one else. Gaining good reputation and trust is the key and takes at least 15+ years of post apprenticeship practice.
